Why a Mechanical Keyboard is Important for Gaming!

When it comes to gaming, every aspect of your setup can affect your performance. A mechanical keyboard is an amazing and important peripheral for gaming, but is often overlooked.

Mechanical Keyboards vs Membrane Keyboards for Gaming

A mechanical keyboard can be a game-changer for gamers compared to membrane or other types of keyboards.

But what is a mechanical keyboard? A mechanical keyboard uses individual mechanical switches underneath each key. These switches have a physical mechanism that registers when the key is pressed, which sends a signal to the computer. In contrast, a membrane keyboard uses a rubber dome membrane underneath the keys that require a full press to register a key press. A mechanical keyboard can provide tactile and audible feedback, whereas a membrane keyboard does not.

One of the main benefits of a mechanical keyboard is its durability. Mechanical switches can last up to 50 million keystrokes, while membrane switches have a varying degree of durability. This means that mechanical keyboards are as a standard more resistant to wear and tear, and they can handle intense gaming sessions without breaking down.

Additionally, some mechanical switches feature a lower actuation force (the amount of pressure to press the key), or actuation distance (the distance needed to register a key press), than membrane switches. It’s also worth mentioning that a lot of mechanical keyboards run at 1000hz polling rate, while membrane keyboards typically run at 125hz polling rate. This means some mechanical keyboards are up to 4x faster for input latency than a membrane keyboard.

Lastly, a mechanical keyboard allows for much more customization than membrane keyboards. Most mechanical keyboards offer the option to change keycaps or switch types, allowing gamers to create a keyboard that really suits their needs. Gamers can also choose switches that match their preferred typing style, whether that’s a light touch or a heavy press.

However, mechanical keyboards aren’t perfect! They may cost a lot more than a membrane keyboard due to the components inside, yet this is worth the cost due to the performance they give.

Another downside is the noise level. Some types of mechanical keyboard switches such as Cherry MX Blue switches can be loud. This may be distracting to others when gaming at home or when using it in a workplace.

With that said, one of the best pieces of equipment for a serious gamer would be a mechanical keyboard. Try one out and have fun in your favorite games!
