How to Improve Headset Audio and Mic Quality

Purchased a new gaming headset recently? Want to get the best possible audio without all the hassle? Well, luckily, this is actually quite easy! Here's how to do that!

Generally speaking, our headsets have been factory-tuned to ensure quality audio right out of the box. However, in some situations, users may want to get a different audio profile or feeling, and that’s totally easy to do!

Just like a new television, a gaming headset and pretty much every headphone as well as microphone in existence can be made better in just a few easy steps!

EQ (Equalizer)

For getting better audio quality, an EQ is the best place to start. While being incredibly easy to use, they’re a bit daunting to the inexperienced customer. Without much knowledge of audio response frequencies and tuning, using an EQ may look like trying to control a space shuttle. However, it’s actually really easy. Let’s take a look!

First, we would recommend people download “Equalizer APO”, and the “PEACE” addon for it.

Equalizer APO is a really great audio EQ, which allows for users to import pre-made EQ settings for headsets/headphones, to get the best audiophile tunings. PEACE is the UI interface for it, which makes it easier to use.

Next, go to this GITHUB page, which has audio settings for the majority of high-end audiophile equipment on the market. Download a few to try out, and import them into Equalizer APO/PEACE.

An easy reference picture on how to do this, is below.

In this picture above, you’ll notice the Frequency section matches numbers on the EQ that you’re looking at when tuning your headset or headphones.

Next, play a game and fine tune the settings to fit your ears to get the best audio that works for YOU. Yes, that’s right, audio is relatively connected to the individual who is listening to the source (headphones, headset, speakers, etc).

3D / Spatial Audio

Now that you’ve fine-tuned your headset for better audio (if it needs it), it’s time to bring your gaming and entertainment audio to the TRUE next level with Spatial Audio or 3D Audio.

Spatial Audio is essentially the sound as surround sound, however it also simulates the horizontal audio space, in other words, sounds that are above or below you. This is perfect for gaming, as it allows you to easily distinguish between enemies or other sound sources all throughout the game’s environment.

In Windows 10, Spatial Audio (Spatial Sound), has been included and is known as Windows Sonic.

Windows Sonic is a spatial sound solution in Windows 10 that can enhance your movie or gaming experience.

Here’s how to turn it on:

  1. Select Start > Settings > System > Sound > Related settings > Sound Control Panel, select a playback device, then select Properties.
  2. In the new window that opens, select Spatial sound.
  3. In Spatial sound format, select Windows Sonic for Headphones, then select Apply.

You can get other spatial sound options by downloading Dolby Access or DTS Sound Unbound from the Microsoft Store. (Note: These cost money, while Windows Sonic is free).

Surround Sound

Some of our headsets such as the Fantech HG11 include premium 7.1 audio quality right out of the box, which can be turned on and adjusted by using our software available on our download page

If you have a supported headset from us, feel free to give it a try to bring your games or movies to life!

Nvidia Noise Suppression (Microphone)

If you have a supported Nvidia RTX graphics card, you can bring your audio to the next level with Nvidia RTX Voice.

Nvidia RTX Voice allows gamers, content creators and livestreamers to easily suppress and remove background noise, which makes it easy to record or talk to friends even if you’re in a loud environment. This is perfect for gamers, live streamers or content creators who live in a household or create content in a noisy environment. It can even remove the loud typing sound of a mechanical keyboard!

As per Nvidia, “This allows users to "go live" or join a meeting without having to worry about unwanted sounds like loud keyboard typing or other ambient noise in noisy environments. RTX Voice also suppresses background noise from players in loud environments, making incoming audio easier to understand.”.

For more information and exactly how to set it up, please go to the Nvidia article on the matter, as you’ll definitely need to make sure your hardware is capable, and get the software from there anyways.

Discord Voice Noise Suppression

Discord is a really awesome way to communicate with your friends and teammates while gaming, and luckily, features really powerful noise suppression which is free to use by every member.

Discord’s Krisp Noise Supression is a machine learning audio suppression tool, which can be used to get pretty crystal clear vocal audio, without the hassle. However, if one of your teammates or friends isn’t using the feature, you would only hear them as per their microphone, as Krisp is entirely client side. For the full details, please go to Discord’s explanation, here.
